Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government environmental programme that provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heating technologies.

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is designed to help domestic and commercial customers meet the costs of installing the following technologies:

• Biomass
• Ground source heat pumps
• Water source heat pumps
• Geothermal
• Solar thermal collectors
• Biomethane and biogas

Financial incentive

The amount of finance you could be eligible to receive will depend on the type of technology, how much renewable energy your solution can produce and how much energy you use.

Payments from the RHI scheme are provided every three months for 20 years.

Are you eligible?

You need to meet the criteria below in order to be eligible for the RHI Scheme:

1. The equipment must be installed in England, Scotland or Wales on or after 15th July 2009
2. The equipment must be new and of a certain size or capacity
3. The equipment and installer must have Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) or equivalent certification (if available for your type of installation)
4. The equipment must use liquid or steam to deliver the heat
5. The equipment must be used to heat space or water - or for carrying out a process where heat is used in the building
6. The equipment cannot be purchased using a public grant

Extra rules to consider

1. Biomass boilers must only be able to burn biomass
2. Ground and water source heat pumps must have a coefficient of performance (COP) of at least 2.9
3. Solar water heating panels must be 'flat plate' or 'evacuated tube'
